Anchor dragging: spot it early, act before she drags
Wind force grows with the square of wind speed, so double the wind means about four times the load, and ships in ballast catch more wind. Enough chain keeps a catenary, so the pull on the shank stays horizontal. One common guideline is 1.5 times the square root of the depth in shackles, about 7 to 8 in 25 metres. Watch for drifting bearings, a track leaving the swing circle or a jerking chain. If she drags, call the Master, get the engine ready, pay out more chain if there is room and inform VTS. In worsening weather, leave early. Always follow your master's orders and SMS.
