Blackout at sea: the first 45 seconds and what comes next

When the main switchboard goes dead, the main engine can trip within seconds and steering stops. If fitted, a transitional battery keeps emergency lighting, alarms and communications on for at least 30 minutes, and the emergency generator starts automatically and connects to the emergency switchboard within 45 seconds at most. On the bridge, call the Master and the engine room, go to emergency steering, show not-under-command lights and send a VHF safety message. In the engine room, if the standby generator didn't take the load, find the cause before closing any breaker, then put a healthy generator on the dead board and restart auxiliaries in groups. Restart the main engine only when lube oil, cooling and fuel are steady. Always follow your master's orders and SMS.
