EU ETS for shipping: who pays for carbon in Europe

Cargo and passenger ships of 5,000 GT and above need one EU allowance for each tonne of CO2e in scope: 100% for voyages between EU ports and in port, 50% for voyages into or out of the EU. The share rose from 40% of 2024 emissions to 70% of 2025 and 100% from 2026, when methane and nitrous oxide also count. An allowance is not an offset credit; offsets cannot be used for EU ETS compliance. Reports are verified by 31 March and allowances surrendered by 30 September, so accurate noon reports, fuel figures and bunker delivery notes matter. Always follow your master's orders and SMS.
