Food waste at sea: the 25 mm rule
Under MARPOL Annex V, ground food waste must pass through a screen with openings of 25 mm or less. Outside special areas, ground food waste can go overboard at least 3 nautical miles from land, and food waste that is not ground at least 12. Inside the special areas in effect, only ground food waste is allowed, at least 12 nautical miles from land or ice shelf, and never mixed with other garbage. Discharge only en route, underway at sea, never at anchor or alongside, and as far from land as practicable. Plastics, wrappers and cooking oil never go in the grinder. Check your position, record the discharge in the Garbage Record Book as Category B, and always follow your Garbage Management Plan, master's orders and SMS.
