Typhoon at sea: know your semicircle and your escape heading
Northern Hemisphere: veering wind means the dangerous semicircle, so put the wind on the starboard bow. Backing wind means the navigable side, so put the wind on the starboard quarter. Steady direction, rising wind and a falling barometer means you're in the path. Best of all, avoid it early and keep out of gale-force winds. Always follow your master's orders and SMS.
