🚨 Need urgent help?

What should I do first?

Recognizing an Emergency

When a situation may be urgent — awareness without becoming a protocol.

WHY THIS MATTERS

  • At sea, delays in recognizing urgency can matter when shore help is not immediately available.
  • You do not need a medical label to know when something feels seriously wrong.

KNOW THIS

  • An emergency is a situation where delay could cause serious harm or where a person is clearly in danger.
  • Trust concerning changes — sudden collapse, severe pain, heavy bleeding, breathing difficulty, or altered responsiveness.
  • When unsure, it is reasonable to escalate rather than wait and hope.
  • MedDeck emergency pathways support action — they do not replace vessel emergency procedures.

RECOGNIZE IT

  • A person may be unresponsive, struggling to breathe, clutching the chest, bleeding heavily, or behaving very differently from normal.
  • Witnesses may describe a fall, crush, burn, choking episode, or sudden confusion.
  • These observations suggest urgency — they do not prove a specific illness.

AT SEA

  • Engine-room noise, night watches, and isolated work areas can delay discovery — report anything unusual promptly.
  • On passage, the bridge and designated officers coordinate medical and emergency response.
  • Follow your vessel's chain of command for raising a medical emergency.

REMEMBER

  • 🚨 If you think it may be urgent, treat it as urgent and get help.
  • 📞 Activate vessel procedures — do not rely on guesswork.
  • 👥 Assign someone to meet responders and relay information clearly.
  • ➡️ Open WHAT SHOULD I DO FIRST? for emergency categories.

EXPLORE MEDDECK

  • Start with Unresponsive or abnormal breathing (EM-001) when responsiveness is the concern.
  • See Difficulty breathing (EM-003) and Severe bleeding (EM-004) for common urgent categories.
