Bleeding and Injuries
Injury awareness — minor wounds versus situations that need urgent help.
WHY THIS MATTERS
- Sharp tools, moving equipment, and heavy work make cuts and injuries common at sea.
- Knowing the difference between a minor wound and serious bleeding helps you respond appropriately.
KNOW THIS
- Most small cuts can be kept clean and protected while monitored.
- Bleeding that is heavy, spurting, or not slowing with simple pressure needs urgent attention.
- Keep the injured area supported and the person calm.
- Detailed bleeding protocols belong in emergency pathways — this lesson builds awareness only.
RECOGNIZE IT
- Common signs may include visible cuts, bruising, swelling, or blood on clothing or the deck.
- A person may feel faint, pale, or weak if blood loss is significant.
- Deep wounds, amputations, or bleeding that soaks through dressings are concerning.
AT SEA
- Injuries often follow mooring operations, maintenance, galley work, or handling cargo.
- First-aid supplies vary by vessel — use what is available according to procedure.
- Report all significant injuries through your vessel's safety and medical reporting system.
REMEMBER
- 🩹 Protect minor wounds and keep them clean.
- 🩸 Heavy or uncontrolled bleeding needs urgent help — open Severe bleeding (EM-004).
- 👀 Watch for shock signs such as pallor, weakness, or confusion.
- 📋 Note how the injury happened for medical assistance.
